Book Club Brunch – Chapter 32

Book Club Brunch – Chapter 32

Hi there,

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of stopping by Upshur Street Books in Washington, DC with a few friends. And, as is probably true of all of you, I can’t enter a bookstore without leaving with at least a few goodies in a bag!

This week, I picked up an excellent pairing – Book One of Bitch Planet and You Learn by Living, by Eleanor Roosevelt. These two manage to create an interestingly balanced perspective on feminism and the resistance. While Roosevelt has a calm, persistent and slow-fought resistance, Bitch Planet gives you the in-your-face confrontation of the patriarchy that’s a vicarious thrill.

We also got to dive into our February book club pick – Kindred, by Octavia E. Butler – this week! I’m about 50 pages in so far, and it’s creepy in the most realistic way possible, considering it’s speculative fiction. Scary as hell.

How are you liking Kindred so far?

Peace,

Whitney

I was asking too much of Sarmada, by Fadi Azzam

I really wanted to like Sarmada by Fadi Azzam, translated by Adam Talib. I still really want to like it. The reviews and the blurbs promised the stories of women living their lives in a small town set against the backdrop of the political situation that has created...

Book Review | The Clancy’s of Queens, by Tara Clancy

When I met Tara Clancy at Book Riot Live last fall, I could not stop laughing. Clancy is such a character. She’s a born storyteller, bravely narrating her own life in the boldest Queens accent you could imagine. She once told NPR:  "Unfortunately, people hear [my...

Bitch Planet is AMAZING! Non-Compliant for life. I’m excited to hear your thoughts on it!

So when this was written I hadn’t read the book yet….then Sunday happened. I finished this in one afternoon-which with a 5 month old made me feel very accomplished. Now I can’t wait for the discussion on this book!
